Connecting
How do I connect to the Chat Room? To enter the Bladelands chat room, simply click on "Chat Room" on the menu on the LHS of each Community page. If you are asked \'Do you want to trust the signed applet distributed by "WebChat"?\', you must say yes. A java applet will then load and log you directly onto the chat room. Back to top
I try to enter the chat room, but my browser/computer crashes! The chat room is run by a java applet which can cause some browsers to crash. You should check that you have a java capable web browser, and that java is turned on. If you are still having trouble we recommend you upgrade to the most recent version of your web browser (whcih is always a good idea), and try again. If it still crashes you can also try using blitzed.org's cgi:irc service, at http://cgiirc.blitzed.org/ - make sure that you type "#BladelandsChronicles" in the "Channel" box. If even that fails, your only option is to try another web browser, or to connect to the chat room via an IRC client - see below. Back to top
Can I connect to the chat room other than via a web page? Yes! The chat room is in fact an IRC Channel, to which you can connect using any IRC client. This is often a better way of logging on than via the website. You can download your IRC client of choice from the internet - popular choices are mIRC for windows, IRCle for Mac, or XChat for most platforms, including Linux. Once you have installed your IRC client you should set it up to connect to Server: irc.blitzed.org, Port: 6667, Channel: #BladelandsChronicles. Back to top
Nicknames
| When I enter the chat room, my nickname is not what I want/expect. When you enter the chat room you will be assigned a nickname based upon the name with which you are currently logged into the Bladelands community. If you are not logged in you will be given the username "GuestXXX" with XXX replaced with random numbers. If you are logged in, but someone has already registered the nickname you have chosen on the chat room server, you will get a nickname based upon your Bladelands Community nickname, but with random numbers added to the end of it. Note that the chat room server is an IRC server used by many chat rooms, not just the Bladelands Chronicles, so although no-one else from Bladelands has your nickname registered for our community, that does not mean that no-one else will have registered it on the chat IRC server. | Can I change my nickname? Yes - just type "/nick newnickname" (without quotes), where "newnickname" is replaced with the nickname you wish to change to. If you pick a nickname which has already been registered by someone else, it will be automatically changed after ~60 seconds. If you are looking for an original nickname, try adding numbers to the beginning or end of your nickname, replacing letters with numbers (eg 1 for l, 0 for o, 3 for e, 7 for t, etc), or adding unusual characters such as brackets, etc. Back to top |
How do I register my nickname so that no-one else can use it? To register a nickname, first change your nick to the nickname you want to register. Then type "/msg nickserv REGISTER password e-mail" (no quotes), with "password" changed to the password you wish to set for that nickname, and "e-mail" replaced with a valid e-mail address. You will then receive an e-mail which contains instructions on how to complete your nickname registration. Back to top
I've registered my nickname, now how do I use it? Once you have registered your nickname you will need to identify yourself to the server by giving your password each time you log on, so that it recognises that you are allowed to use that nickname. First you must ensure that your nickname is the correct one (ie the one you registered). Then you type "/msg nickserv identify password" (no quotes), with "password" replaced with the password that you set for that nickname. If you do not wish to type this command every time you can set it up to be executed every time you log on. See below for details. Back to top
IRC Commands
How do I do X while I'm in the chat room? You can do many things besides chatting while you are in the chat room. For example you can performing actions, find out information about another user, find out information about a channel, send and receive memos to and from other users, and so on. All of these things are controlled using IRC commands (anything which starts with a forwards slash, /). There are many hundreds of IRC commands, but most people will only need a few. Some of the most common ones can be found in the blitzed.org New Users Guide, and some more advanced ones in their User Services Help Pages. For yet more commands, try the IRC Command Cosmos, which has every command which exists on Undernet. Blitzed may not use all of the same commands as Undernet, but many will be the same or similar. If you still can't find out how to do something, we suggest you ask google. Back to top
Misc
| I don't want to have to type the same command every time I log on. If you are a registered user of this community and you have one or more commands which you would like to execute every time you log onto the Bladelands chat room, you can set them to be executed automatically. If you are connecting to the chat room via the website, you should list the commands you want to execute each time under Your Home > Your Profile > IRC Chat Room Commands. Examples of commands you might want to use every time would be "/nick mynickname" to change to your preferred nickname, "/msg nickserv identify password" to give the password for your registered nickname, and so on. | I still need more help - where should I look? Blitzed.org have a good help section on their website which should cover most IRC issues. Check out their website at www.blitzed.org, especially the help section. Alternatively you can try searching the internet - we recommend you ask google. Back to top |
